COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc Geography programme provides students with a strong scientific understanding of environmental systems while developing the practical, technical, and research skills required to address major global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, ecological management, water resources, and environmental change. In the first stage of the course, students complete core modules including Introductory Geographical Research and Fieldwork, Earth Systems and Processes, Living in a Globalised World, Data Handling and Presentation, and Practical Environmental Investigation. These modules introduce students to university-level study, academic development, career planning, and essential field and laboratory skills while providing practical experience in research design, data collection, and analysis. Students also develop expertise in spatial technologies and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which are increasingly important across environmental industries and scientific research. Through enquiry-based learning and field investigations, students gain a strong foundation in geographical methods and environmental analysis. During the second stage of the degree, students study advanced modules such as Geographical Enquiry and Threats to Civilisation while preparing for independent research and dissertation work. A range of optional modules allows students to specialise in areas including Biogeography, Ice Age Earth, Fluvial Hydrosystems, Geographic Information Systems, Sea-Level Change and Coasts, Monitoring and Management of Habitats and Species, Global Health, Conflict and Peacebuilding, and Population Dynamics. In the final year, students complete an independent BSc Geography Dissertation involving original research based on themes such as environmental change, ecology, water resources, sustainability, or environmental geography. The project may involve collecting primary field data or conducting detailed analysis of secondary datasets and requires students to critically evaluate and extend existing knowledge in their chosen field. Additional optional modules including Climate Change, River Science and Management, Pollution in Ecological Systems, Reintroduction and Rewilding, Advanced Geographic Information Systems, Changing Coasts, and Professional Experience opportunities enable students to tailor their studies to specific career goals. Overall, the programme develops highly valued skills in research, GIS, fieldwork, environmental analysis, and problem solving, preparing graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, conservation
