COURSE CURRICULUM

This Criminology and Psychology course combines psychological science with criminological study to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour, offending, victims, and the criminal justice system. The programme develops knowledge across both disciplines, helping students explore how psychological factors, social influences, and environmental conditions contribute to crime and human decision-making. In the first year, students build essential foundations in psychology and criminology through modules covering psychological theories, research methods, crime, justice, and the criminal investigation process. Students learn how psychologists study behaviour using scientific evidence, critical thinking, and data analysis while also examining how crimes are investigated and processed through the criminal justice system. The second year focuses on advanced psychological concepts, including cognitive psychology, social psychology, individual differences, and developmental psychology. Students explore how people think, make decisions, develop across their lifespan, and interact with others. They gain practical experience in designing research studies, analysing psychological data, and applying theories to real-world issues. Optional criminology modules allow students to specialise in areas such as crime science, offender rehabilitation, forensic investigation, and social harm. In the final year, students undertake an independent research dissertation, allowing them to investigate a topic related to psychology or forensic applications using qualitative or quantitative research methods. Students can explore specialist areas including homicide, organised crime, sexual violence, trauma-informed justice, crime scene investigation, and policing challenges. Throughout the course, students develop valuable skills in research, data analysis, critical evaluation, communication, and understanding complex behavioural issues. The programme prepares graduates for careers in criminal justice, forensic psychology support, policing, probation, research, victim services, mental health, social care, and related fields. By combining psychological knowledge with criminological understanding, this degree equips students with the ability to analyse crime, understand human behaviour, and contribute to evidence-based approaches in justice and social services.
