COURSE CURRICULUM
The Biomedical Science programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human health, disease processes, and laboratory investigation through a progressive combination of scientific theory, practical skills, and independent research. In the first year, students study core modules including Introduction to Biomedical Science, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Infection and Immunity, and Microbiology. These subjects establish a strong foundation in the structure and function of the human body, cellular processes, genetics, and infectious diseases while introducing essential laboratory and research skills required for academic success and future professional practice. Students develop practical competence through enquiry-based learning and the creation of laboratory portfolios that encourage critical thinking and lifelong learning. In the second year, students advance to specialist topics including Medical Microbiology, Genomics and Bioinformatics, Clinical Immunology, Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Cell and Tissue Pathology, and Research Skills and Proposal Development. Students investigate pathogenic microorganisms, disease diagnosis, laboratory testing methods, and public health strategies while gaining an understanding of modern biomedical technologies and clinical applications. Optional opportunities such as internships and enterprise studies provide additional professional experience and employability development. In the final year, students undertake an independent Research Project alongside advanced subjects including Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biotechnology, and optional modules such as Neuroscience, Clinical Parasitology, Virology, Epidemiology, Frontiers in Cancer Medicine, Human Nutrition, and Professional Experience. The major research project enables students to conduct original investigations into a biomedical topic of their choice, involving data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of findings. Through this process students demonstrate initiative, communication skills, problem solving, and effective time management. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers in biomedical laboratories, healthcare services, pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology, medical research, and postgraduate professional training in health-related disciplines.
