COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology programme provides students with a broad and flexible understanding of life sciences through a combination of laboratory work, field research, and independent scientific investigation. During the first stage of study, students complete core modules including Diversity and Evolution, Fundamentals of Ecology, Biochemistry, Animal Physiology, Methods in Biology, Ethics in Biosciences, and Field Research Training. These modules introduce the origins and diversity of life, biological classification, natural selection, adaptation, Mendelian genetics, and contemporary developments in evolutionary biology while establishing strong foundations in ecological principles, physiology, scientific methods, and ethical considerations within biological research. Students develop practical and analytical skills through laboratory activities, presentations, and research-based assignments that prepare them for more advanced study. In the second stage, students explore specialised topics including Animal Behaviour, Microbiology, Plant Ecology and Diversity, and Research Skills and Proposal Development in Biology, alongside optional modules such as Internship, Biogeography, Cellular Pathology, Mammalian Reproduction, Anatomy and Biomechanics, Marine Ecology, Field Research, Monitoring and Management of Habitats and Species, and Geographic Information Systems. Students investigate how organisms interact with each other and their environments while gaining experience in designing and conducting scientific research projects and considering legal and ethical frameworks associated with biological studies. In the final stage of the programme, students can specialise further through modules such as Ecology, Pollution in Ecological Systems, Parasitology, Evolution and Behaviour, Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Frontiers in Cancer Medicine, Reintroduction and Rewilding, Wildlife Disease, and Advanced Geographic Information Systems. Students also complete an independent dissertation involving original research into a biological topic of their choice, requiring the collection, analysis, and interpretation of scientific data while demonstrating critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and project management skills. The programme prepares graduates for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, conservation, environmental management, and related scientific fields.
