COURSE CURRICULUM

The Primary Education with QTS course modules are designed to progressively develop students into confident, knowledgeable and reflective primary school teachers through a balance of academic study and extensive school-based experience. In the first year, students begin by building the foundations of professional teaching practice through their first school placement, where they complete 35 days of practical experience in schools. Alongside this, they study the key areas of the primary curriculum, including English, mathematics and science, while gaining an introduction to foundation subjects and developing an understanding of child development, learning processes and the qualities required to become an effective teacher. The second year focuses on strengthening professional practice through a longer school placement of 45 days, allowing students to take greater responsibility within the classroom and further develop their teaching skills. Students deepen their understanding of curriculum delivery, leadership in learning and mathematics teaching while selecting a foundation subject specialism such as history, geography, computing, music, art and design, physical education, religious education, design and technology, modern languages or personal, social and health education. These subject specialisms allow students to develop expertise and confidence in delivering lessons within their chosen area. In the final year, students complete advanced school placements totalling 40 days and focus on consolidating their professional identity and preparing for employment as qualified teachers. Modules explore inclusive education and supporting children with complex and diverse needs, while opportunities for foundation subject enhancement and continuing professional development allow students to refine their teaching practice further. Students also complete an independent dissertation project, developing advanced research and critical thinking skills while investigating an area of educational interest. Throughout the programme, practical teaching experience is integrated with academic learning, ensuring graduates meet professional teaching standards and are fully prepared to begin successful careers in primary education with Qualified Teacher Status.
