COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sports Journalism degree is designed to prepare students for careers in sports media, broadcasting and digital journalism through a combination of practical training, industry engagement and professional experience. The course benefits from strong links with major media organisations including the BBC, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video Sport and The Athletic, while graduates have progressed to careers with Sky Sports News, Williams Formula One Team, La Liga TV, Matchroom Boxing and Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Aston Villa. In the first year, students develop a foundation in journalism through modules such as Media Law, Multimedia Production, Journalism in Context, Sports Writing and Presenting, and The Sports Reporter. These modules build essential skills in news reporting, interviewing, content creation, broadcasting and legal responsibilities within the media industry. During the second year, students further develop their expertise through Feature Writing, Live Sports Coverage, Sports Media Relations, Sport, Celebrity and Society and Multimedia Sports Desk. They gain experience producing content across multiple platforms while learning advanced interviewing, research and storytelling techniques. Optional modules such as History and Ethics of Sport and Talk Radio allow students to specialise according to their interests. In the final year, students explore Ethics, Censorship and Regulation while undertaking a major research project or dissertation and working within a Professional Sports Desk environment that mirrors real newsroom practice. Additional modules focus on media careers, sports data analysis, fantasy sports and esports, reflecting the changing nature of sports media. Optional studies in broadcasting and journalism trends further enhance employability. Assessments include portfolios, practical projects, presentations and examinations that replicate industry expectations. Graduates leave with a strong multimedia portfolio, professional contacts and extensive practical experience, preparing them for careers as sports reporters, presenters, broadcasters, media officers, digital content creators and communications specialists in the sports industry.
