The Sound and Music Production degree combines creative practice, technical expertise, and professional development to prepare students for careers across the modern audio and music industries. In the first year, students build essential knowledge through modules including The Music Business, Audio and Studio Technology, Making Tracks, Sound for Screen Media, and Live Event Technologies. Students develop practical skills in recording, mixing, production, and audio technology while gaining a strong understanding of how the music industry operates across different sectors, job roles, and career pathways. The Music Business module introduces students to industry structures, current trends, professional networking, and career planning, helping them begin building their professional identity from the start of the course. Throughout this stage, students engage in extensive practical work and portfolio development while benefiting from significant studio access and industry-focused learning experiences. In the second year, students expand their technical and creative abilities through modules including The Future Professional, Music and Sound Studies, Music Production Techniques, Sound Design and Post-Production, Game Audio, Immersive Audio, Composing for Screen Media, and Audio Broadcast and Production. A major feature of this stage is the opportunity to work on live industry briefs for commercial clients, providing valuable experience of client meetings, negotiations, project management, and delivering professional work to agreed deadlines. Previous collaborations with regional organisations provide students with authentic industry experience while further strengthening employability skills and professional confidence. Students also continue developing their online presence and industry profile to support future career opportunities. In the final year, students undertake advanced study through modules including The Research Project, The Music and Sound Professional, The Production Project, Advanced Audio Techniques, and Advanced Audio Techniques 2. The Research Project allows students to explore a specialist area of interest within music, technology, business, culture, or society while working closely with an academic supervisor to produce substantial independent research outputs in written, audiovisual, or presentation formats. Throughout the programme, students develop expertise across studio production, sound design, post-production, game audio, immersive sound technologies, live events, and broadcast media. By graduation, students possess a strong portfolio, industry experience, technical proficiency, and professional networks that prepare them for careers in music production, sound engineering, film and television audio, game audio, broadcasting, live events, and the wider creative industries.
