COURSE CURRICULUM

This Music degree is designed for students who want to build careers as songwriters, performers, producers, music entrepreneurs and creative professionals within the modern music industry. The course focuses on developing original music, live performance skills and industry knowledge while encouraging students to explore their own artistic identity and creative direction. From the first year, students begin writing, recording and performing their own material while learning about music cultures, economies, business practices and contemporary media environments. Modules such as Songmaking and Production, Songwriting and Performance, Music Cultures and Economies, and Music Video Production provide practical experience in creating music and visual content for modern audiences. In the second year, students develop advanced professional skills through modules including Music Production, Music Performance, Composing for Screen Media, Music and Sound Studies and Music Making in the Creator Economy. Students work on live projects with commercial clients and gain experience in negotiation, project management and professional collaboration through industry-focused activities. The university's links with organisations such as Sony, Warner, PRS, Glastonbury and Sentric Publishing provide valuable networking opportunities and exposure to the professional music sector. In the final year, students complete major independent projects including a substantial research project, live music event and major music production project, while exploring sustainable music practices and professional development. Assessments are primarily portfolio and project based, reflecting real industry activities rather than traditional examinations. Graduates leave with an extensive portfolio of original work, live performance experience, business knowledge and professional connections that prepare them for careers as recording artists, performers, producers, composers, educators, promoters, managers or entrepreneurs in the music and wider creative industries.
