COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Education course is structured across three years and provides students with the knowledge, practical skills and professional experience required to become innovative and inclusive practitioners in physical education and sport settings. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology and human movement through the study of human structure and function while gaining an introduction to primary and secondary physical education, sport psychology, sport pedagogy, professional practice, research principles, sociology and ethics. Students learn how scientific theory connects with physical activity, coaching and the development of young people in educational environments. During the second year, the programme focuses on the growth and development of children and young people from early childhood through adolescence, with particular attention to motor skill development and participation in physical activity. Students explore outdoor and adventurous activities, inclusive approaches to adapting the physical education curriculum, research methods and professional practice through placement opportunities. Modules also examine the relationship between family, schools and communities, alongside wider social and health issues affecting participation in sport and physical activity. In the final year, students critically evaluate contemporary physical education policies, government strategies and current issues affecting school sport and physical education delivery. They study alternative physical activities in schools, health promotion and wellbeing, and opportunities to teach accredited physical education qualifications. Students also undertake an independent dissertation project, allowing them to investigate a specialist area of interest in greater depth and develop advanced research skills. Optional modules provide additional opportunities for teaching practice, professional placements and the exploration of sport within wider social contexts. Throughout the course, students develop leadership, communication, research and reflective practice skills while gaining the confidence to design inclusive, engaging and innovative physical education experiences that promote lifelong participation in physical activity and contribute positively to health and wellbeing across diverse communities.
