COURSE CURRICULUM
The Editorial and Advertising Photography programme provides students with a strong foundation in visual storytelling, commercial photography, and professional creative practice while preparing them for careers across the photography and media industries. The course begins with compulsory modules including Creating and Telling Stories, Skills for Still and Moving Image, The Zine, and Creating Your Visual Language, introducing students to contemporary editorial, advertising, and photojournalism photography. Students learn how to create compelling visual narratives for newspapers, magazines, online platforms, and advertising campaigns while exploring the relationship between images and text. Teaching is supported through tutor guidance, peer discussions, and contributions from guest speakers from the creative industries, while studies in photographic practice, research methods, ethics, and professionalism help develop a strong understanding of the industry. Practical projects encourage creativity and technical development through studio and location photography using DSLR and medium-format film cameras. In later stages, students study Editorial Photography with Moving Image, Communications for the Creative Industries with Placement, Creative Research and Development, and The Visual Narrative, expanding their skills in both still and moving image production. Through lectures, workshops, and tutorials, students gain experience in studio and location lighting, large format film photography, digital imaging, video production, and editing techniques while developing proficiency with professional software including Phase One, Capture One, Adobe InDesign, and Premiere Pro, alongside optional darkroom practice. Advanced study focuses on Advanced Professional Practice, Major Project Research and Development, The Creative Professional, and Major Project Production, where students undertake commissioned work while demonstrating professional workflows and business practices. Students also prepare personalised business documents and present potential career pathways through a PechaKucha presentation, strengthening their communication and professional planning skills. Additional opportunities for professional engagement and industry work experience help students build confidence, develop creative problem-solving abilities, and prepare for successful careers in photography, content creation, advertising, and the wider creative industries.
