COURSE CURRICULUM

The Musical Theatre programme offers an intensive three-year curriculum designed to develop versatile performers with advanced skills in acting, singing, dancing, and professional performance practice. During the first year, students establish strong foundations through modules including Performance in Context, The Musical Theatre Actor, The Musical Theatre Singer, The Musical Theatre Dancer, and The Creative Professional. Students develop practical skills across the three core disciplines of musical theatre while exploring the historical, social, cultural, and political contexts that have shaped performance traditions and genres. The programme encourages engagement with both historical and contemporary performance styles while examining important themes such as equality, diversity, sustainability, and the value of non-Western performance traditions. Students also begin developing academic, research, and digital literacy skills that support both artistic and professional growth. In the second year, students build upon these foundations through modules including Collaborative Performance and Production, The Arts in Education, Musical Theatre Technique, Musical Theatre Performance, and Approaches to Research. A key feature of this stage is the opportunity to collaborate with students from Acting and Dance programmes on shared performance projects, creating valuable interdisciplinary learning experiences that mirror professional industry environments. Students explore the relationship between performance and technology, gain insight into technical theatre practices, and develop broader understanding of production processes while strengthening their practical performance abilities. During the final year, students focus on advanced professional preparation through modules including Industry Showcase, Advanced Musical Theatre Technique, Advanced Musical Theatre Performance, and a Major Research Project, with optional opportunities to study Technical Theatre and The Arts Practitioner. The Industry Showcase plays a central role in preparing students for employment by enabling them to rehearse and present industry-facing performance material while developing professional promotional resources such as portfolios and audition materials. Throughout the programme, students gain extensive live performance experience in a variety of venues and productions while refining their artistic identity and professional skills. The course places strong emphasis on collaboration, creativity, adaptability, and employability, ensuring graduates are prepared for careers across musical theatre, theatre, film, television, education, and the wider creative industries.
