COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Business degree provides students with the knowledge, creative skills, and professional experience required to succeed in the evolving global music industry. The programme combines marketing, technology, business management, legal understanding, and practical industry experience to prepare students for a wide range of careers across music and entertainment. In the first year, students study core modules including Marketing, Data & Analytics, Music Video Production, The Music Business, Music Cultures and Economies, Artist Management and Development, and Audio Production. These modules introduce students to the foundations of the music industry while developing essential skills in music promotion, audience analysis, content creation, artist development, and digital platforms. Students learn how modern music businesses use social media and streaming data to understand audiences, create effective campaigns, and make informed strategic decisions. Through assignments and portfolio development, students gain practical experience in analysing industry trends and developing marketing strategies. In the second year, students explore specialist areas through modules including Music Law and Copyright, The Future Professional, New Music Enterprise, Managing Events, Gigs and Festivals, Music PR and Journalism, Design Thinking and Music Business Innovation, and Music and Sound Studies. Students develop a detailed understanding of intellectual property, copyright legislation, contracts, licensing, negotiation, and the commercial structures that support the music industry. They also build entrepreneurial skills, event management abilities, and professional communication techniques needed for careers in music organisations, labels, festivals, and creative enterprises. In the final year, students complete advanced industry-focused modules including Group Project: The Production Company, The Research Project, Professional Experience, IP and Music Rights Management, Major Project or Industry Placement, and #GoHardOrGoHome. These modules provide opportunities to collaborate with industry partners, create events, conduct research, and deliver professional projects addressing current challenges within the music sector. Students develop practical expertise in project management, budgeting, marketing, operations, and creative leadership while building professional networks. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers in artist management, music marketing, record labels, event production, music publishing, copyright management, journalism, and music entrepreneurship through a combination of academic knowledge and real-world industry experience.
