COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Journalism degree is a highly practical and industry-focused programme designed to prepare students for modern multimedia journalism careers. From the first year, students develop skills in news writing, podcasting, video production, social media content creation, multimedia design and presentation techniques while gaining a strong understanding of media law, ethics and regulation. The course mirrors professional journalism standards and includes preparation for the NCTJ Media Law examination. In the second year, students explore politics, democracy and the role of journalism in holding power to account, while developing expertise in feature writing, digital storytelling, publishing, branding and advanced video production. Optional modules such as Sports Journalism and Culture, Celebrity and Fashion Journalism allow students to specialise according to their interests. The final year focuses on professional practice, innovation and career preparation through modules covering public relations, campaigns and investigations, media networking, journalism trends and specialist reporting. Students undertake a major journalism project and participate in live journalism production, building an extensive professional portfolio. Teaching combines newsroom simulations, practical assignments, industry-standard facilities and real-world reporting experiences to develop confident, ethical and adaptable journalists. Graduates leave with expertise in multimedia storytelling, investigative reporting, digital content creation, communication strategy and audience engagement, making them suitable for careers in newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, digital media organisations, communications agencies, public relations, content creation and freelance journalism.
