COURSE CURRICULUM
The Illustration programme combines creative experimentation, animation, research, and professional development to help students become versatile and innovative visual communicators. In the early stages of study, students complete modules such as Introduction to Animation, Drawing Lab, Process Lab, Theory and Critique, Tools and Machines, and Words and Pictures, which introduce the principles of transforming still images into moving images while developing an understanding of narrative, pacing, storytelling, and motion. Students explore both contemporary and historical applications of animation and illustration while gaining practical experience in illustration design and animation production. The programme encourages experimentation across a variety of media and formats, enabling students to realise creative ideas through innovative visual outcomes and build a strong foundation in both technical and conceptual skills. As students progress, they undertake modules including Practice as Research, Sequential Illustration, Entrepreneurship and Markets, and Olio Publication, with optional opportunities to study Narrative Animation and Advanced Printmaking. These modules encourage students to view visual practice as a legitimate form of research and inquiry, using drawing, image-making, interviews, questionnaires, and primary research methods to investigate ideas and respond critically to creative challenges. Students explore the relationship between theory and practice while developing methodologies that support research-based artistic work and strengthen their personal creative identities. In the final stage of the programme, students complete modules such as Final Major Project Development, Portfolio Skills, Research or Dissertation, Exhibition, and Final Major Project. Students undertake extensive research, experimentation, planning, and visual development in preparation for major independent projects that reflect their interests, ambitions, and creative direction. Through portfolio creation, exhibition opportunities, and professional planning, students establish personal, creative, and career objectives while preparing for employment or further study. Overall, the programme develops skilled illustrators and artists who are capable of combining research, storytelling, creativity, and professional practice within a wide range of creative industries.
