COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Human Geography programme provides students with an in-depth understanding of contemporary social, political, economic, and cultural issues while developing the research and analytical skills required to investigate complex human challenges across local and global contexts. During the first stage of the degree, students study core modules including Introductory Geographical Research and Fieldwork, Living in a Globalised World, Data Handling and Presentation, Practical Human Geography, and Sustainable Futures. These modules introduce students to university-level study, career planning, and the core concepts of human geography while developing essential fieldwork, research, and data analysis skills. Students also gain experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial technologies, enabling them to analyse social and geographical patterns using modern digital tools. Through enquiry-based learning and practical investigations, students develop a strong foundation in geographical research methods and field studies. In the second stage of the programme, students advance their research capabilities through modules such as Geographical Enquiry and Threats to Civilisation while preparing for more independent and specialised study. Optional modules allow students to explore topics including Population Dynamics, Global Health, Conflict and Peacebuilding, Crimes against Humanity, Geographic Information Systems, and Division, Difference and Inequalities, enabling them to tailor their studies according to their interests and career ambitions. In the final year, students complete a Human Geography Dissertation alongside the study of Geopolitics of Global Environmental Change. The dissertation provides an opportunity to design and undertake an independent research project focused on themes such as population and migration, global health and wellbeing, globalisation and development, inequality, crime, sustainability, and the geography of power. Students conduct original research using primary field data or innovative analysis of secondary data under the guidance of an academic supervisor with related expertise. Additional optional modules including Migration Challenges, Global Ageing, Humanitarian Intervention and Disaster Relief, Identity, Injustice and Intersectionality, People, Power and Social Change, Advanced Geographic Information Systems, and Professional Experience opportunities further enhance career preparation. Overall, the programme equips graduates with highly transferable skills in research, communication, critical thinking, and data analysis that are valued across government, policy, research, education, international development, and many other professional sectors.
