COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Geography programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of both human and physical geography while developing the practical, analytical, and research skills required for professional careers and postgraduate study. During the first stage of the course, students study core modules including Introductory Geographical Research and Fieldwork, Earth Systems and Processes, Living in a Globalised World, Data Handling and Presentation, and Practical Environmental Investigation. These modules introduce essential academic and professional skills, including research design, fieldwork techniques, career planning, data analysis, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students learn through enquiry-based projects and practical investigations, gaining experience in collecting and analysing field data while developing an understanding of environmental and global processes. In the second stage of the degree, students progress to advanced geographical research through modules such as Geographical Enquiry, Threats to Civilisation, and a fieldwork elective, while also choosing from a wide range of specialist options including Biogeography, Population Dynamics, Global Health, Conflict and Peacebuilding, Geographic Information Systems, Sea-Level Change and Coasts, Crimes against Humanity, and Environmental Management topics. These modules encourage critical thinking, independent investigation, and reflection on personal and academic development while preparing students for advanced field research and dissertation work. In the final year, students complete an independent Geography Dissertation based on themes such as population and migration, globalisation and development, or the geography of crime. The project involves original primary field research or the detailed analysis of secondary data and requires students to critically evaluate and extend existing knowledge within their chosen area of study. Additional optional modules including Climate Change, Migration Challenges, Global Ageing, Advanced Geographic Information Systems, Humanitarian Intervention and Disaster Relief, Global and Organised Crime, and Professional Experience opportunities allow students to tailor the degree to their interests and career goals. Overall, the programme equips graduates with highly transferable skills in research, analysis, communication, and problem-solving that are valued across a wide range of industries and professions.
