COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film and Television Production degree is a highly practical and industry-focused programme designed to develop creative storytellers, technical specialists and future film professionals. Students learn by creating films throughout their studies, gaining hands-on experience in all stages of production while building a professional portfolio of work. The course has an excellent reputation, with student productions receiving recognition at prestigious festivals including Sundance, SXSW and the BFI, while also being accredited by ScreenSkills for its high standards of industry training. During the first year, students explore the foundations of filmmaking through modules covering cinematography, editing, sound, production design, screenwriting, studio production and screen aesthetics. They also study the role of the producer and the importance of planning, budgeting, research and project management during pre-production. In the second year, students progress to larger collaborative projects in fiction filmmaking, television drama and documentary production while having opportunities to specialise in areas such as screenwriting, visual effects, sound design and digital workflows. Students work within professional production teams, taking on industry roles and using advanced equipment and software to produce high-quality creative projects. The final year focuses on advanced production practice and professional development. Students pitch original film or television ideas to industry professionals and successful projects are selected for production. Each student assumes a specialist leadership role such as director, producer, cinematographer, editor or sound designer and works collaboratively to create a professional short film or television pilot suitable for film festivals and industry distribution. Additional modules explore emerging technologies, feature film writing, brand storytelling and independent cinema, preparing graduates for careers across film, television and the wider creative industries.
