COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature degree provides students with a broad and engaging exploration of literature, language, culture and society across different historical periods and global contexts. The course examines literary works written in English as well as translated texts, allowing students to understand the power of literature to shape ideas, identities and cultures. In the first year, students develop essential academic, analytical and communication skills while studying topics such as mythology, poetry, contemporary fiction, children's and young adult literature, and the relationship between literature and history and culture. The second year expands knowledge through modules exploring North American literature, Victorian writing, crime fiction, Romantic literature and the relationship between literature and society. Students also develop employability skills through community engagement, placements and professional development activities designed to prepare them for future careers. In the final year, students undertake advanced study in specialist areas including travel writing, postcolonial and world literature, eighteenth-century literature, and literature focusing on issues of gender, sexuality and censorship. An independent dissertation allows students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of personal interest while developing advanced research and critical thinking skills. Throughout the degree, interactive workshops and seminars encourage discussion, debate and close textual analysis within a supportive learning environment. Field trips, guest lectures and collaborations with other disciplines such as Creative Writing provide additional opportunities to broaden academic and professional experience. Graduates leave the programme with strong analytical, communication, research and creative skills suitable for careers in publishing, teaching, journalism, editing, media, marketing, public relations, content creation and the wider creative industries, as well as postgraduate study opportunities in literature and related disciplines.
