COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and Creative Writing degree combines the study of literary traditions with the development of practical writing skills, giving students the opportunity to become both critical readers and creative writers. Throughout the programme, students explore a wide range of literary texts, from mythology and classical literature to contemporary fiction, while simultaneously developing their own abilities in prose, poetry and drama writing. In the first year, modules introduce essential academic and creative skills through subjects such as storytelling, contemporary fiction, mythology, poetry, drama and creative writing techniques, alongside support for academic development and employability. The second year expands students' literary and creative understanding through community engagement, professional development and a wide choice of optional modules including poetry, novels, short stories, performance writing, North American literature, crime fiction and Romantic literature. Students gain practical experience through placements, collaborations and opportunities to apply their skills in real-world settings. In the final year, students focus on career preparation, portfolio development and independent research through a dissertation project. They can further specialise in areas such as experimental writing, non-fiction, travel writing, postcolonial literature, virtual world writing, gender and sexuality studies or eighteenth-century literature. The course places workshops, seminars and collaboration at the centre of learning, allowing students to receive feedback from academics, published writers and peers while refining both analytical and creative abilities. Graduates leave with a strong portfolio of written work, advanced communication and critical thinking skills, and excellent preparation for careers in publishing, journalism, teaching, editing, marketing, media, creative industries, professional writing and postgraduate study.
