COURSE CURRICULUM

This Early Childhood Studies degree is designed to prepare students for professional careers supporting children from birth to eight years old and their families through inclusive, evidence-based and child-centred practice. The programme combines academic study with practical placements to develop professional knowledge, leadership skills and a strong understanding of children's development and wellbeing. In the first year, students explore the foundations of professional practice through modules including Foundations for Professional Learning and Inclusive Practice, Developing Professional Competencies for Inclusive Practice: Placement, Children’s Learning and Development: Psychological Perspectives, Childhood in Society, Inclusive Practice and SEND: Understanding Children’s Needs and Voices, and Pedagogy of Playful Learning. These modules provide an understanding of child development, inclusion, ethics, educational theory and the importance of play in learning while building digital and professional skills. In the second year, students strengthen their professional abilities through modules such as Developing as a Professional: Leadership and Team Collaboration, Establishing Professional Competencies for Inclusive Practice: Placement, Professional Enquiry, Inclusive Practice with Families and Communities, Promoting Children’s Health and Wellbeing, Safeguarding and Professional Responsibility, and Creativity and Critical Thinking. This stage focuses on leadership, teamwork, communication and supporting children in diverse social and educational environments. In the final year, students study advanced topics including Managing Inclusive Practice in Early Childhood, Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood, Global Perspectives in Childhood Studies, Supporting Children and Families through Interventions, and Future-Proofing Early Childhood Practice, alongside completing an independent Professional Dissertation Project and advanced placement experience. The course places inclusion and support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at the centre of learning and provides valuable practical experience through placements in professional settings. Graduates develop expertise in child development, safeguarding, leadership, family support and inclusive education, preparing them for careers in early years education, family support services, children's charities, health services and community organisations. The programme equips students with the knowledge, confidence and professional skills required to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families.
