COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing degree is designed for students who want to develop as writers from the very beginning of their studies while gaining experience across prose, poetry and drama. The course encourages creativity, experimentation and the development of an individual writing style through practical workshops, peer discussions and guidance from published writers and experienced academics. In the first year, students build essential academic and writing skills through modules such as Words in Action, Shaping Stories, Shaping Worlds, The Verse and the Stage, Putting it on the Page and Writing and New Technology, which introduce storytelling techniques, poetry, drama and digital forms of writing. In the second year, the course expands into professional and community-focused writing through modules including Stories to Live By, Poetry and Poetics, Short Stories, Big Impacts, Writing for Performance and The Novel, while helping students explore career opportunities and gain transferable skills through placements and real-world projects. Students also have the opportunity to see their work performed and presented to wider audiences, including collaborations with professional actors at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre and participation in open mic events and the Creative Writing Festival. The final year focuses on employability, portfolio development and advanced creative practice through modules such as Writing in the Virtual World, Experimental Writing, Writing Non-Fiction, Collaborative Project and Dissertation. Students graduate with a substantial portfolio of creative work, practical industry knowledge and professional confidence. Career opportunities include novelist, poet, playwright, scriptwriter, editor, publisher, content writer, copywriter, journalist, communications specialist, marketing professional, teacher and roles across publishing, media and the wider creative industries. The course prepares graduates not only to write creatively but also to apply their communication and storytelling skills across a wide range of professional sectors.
