COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Animation programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of animation theory, creative practice, and industry workflows through a combination of practical and academic modules. In the early stages of the course, students study subjects such as Animation Tool Kit, Screen Literacy, Drawing, Animation Hybrid Project, Drawing for Animation, and Animation History, building essential artistic and technical foundations. Students learn the key principles of 2D animation including timing, motion study, squash and stretch, scene planning, walk cycles, character design, and movement mechanics, developing the core skills required for professional animation production. Practical workshops introduce a range of industry-standard software for animation, motion graphics, and audio production while encouraging experimentation and creative storytelling through short animated projects that contribute to a growing professional showreel. As students progress, modules including Animation Pitch and Practice, Analysing Animation, Animation Character and Workflow, Storyboarding and Sequential Illustration, Animation Industries, and Portfolio Generator focus on professional development and studio practice. Students create original animation concepts, develop project bibles, explore pitching methods, and learn pre-production planning techniques commonly used within the animation industry. Selected projects are approved for production through collaborative pitching sessions, encouraging teamwork and communication skills in a studio environment. In the final stage of the programme, students undertake advanced modules such as Major Animation Project, Experimental Research Project, The Case Study, Sound Design for Animation, Postproduction for Animation, and Animation Workplace. These modules require students to complete the full animation production pipeline from research and concept development to pre-production, production, and post-production, resulting in a professional-quality animated film or equivalent project. Throughout the course, students build technical expertise, creative confidence, professional portfolios, and industry-ready skills that prepare them for careers across the animation and creative media sectors.
