COURSE CURRICULUM
The PGCE Secondary Science (Chemistry) program at UEA offers a comprehensive and dynamic pathway for aspiring teachers, blending practical experience with academic learning. Over the course of the year, you will spend a minimum of 120 days in school placements across two different schools, giving you the chance to experience teaching in contrasting environments. This hands-on experience is paired with 60 days of structured study at UEA, where you'll engage in workshops, seminars, and lectures designed to develop your subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. The course provides a supportive environment where you’ll learn from experienced teachers and Subject Leads, helping you build confidence in the classroom. The program is structured to gradually increase your teaching responsibilities, starting with observation and progressing to solo teaching. This allows you to gain real-world experience at a comfortable pace, developing your own teaching style while receiving targeted support from mentors. You’ll have opportunities to collaborate with trainees from other subject areas, sharing insights and refining your approach to teaching.Throughout your studies, you will focus on pedagogical strategies specific to teaching chemistry, including inspirational practical work that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. You’ll also gain insight into teaching beyond your main subject specialism, with additional sessions in biology and physics, ensuring you’re well-rounded in your scientific knowledge. In addition to your school placements, you will complete assignments that encourage reflection on your teaching practice and foster continuous professional development. These include the Curriculum Assignment, where you reflect on your first placement experience, and the Reflective Project in Education, which allows you to explore broader educational topics of interest. By the end of the course, you will be fully prepared to teach chemistry to students aged 11-16 and develop post-16 teaching skills. You will graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits, equipping you to make a meaningful impact in the classroom.
