COURSE CURRICULUM

The Engineers Teach Physics PGCE program at UEA is structured to provide a rich, immersive experience that prepares you to become an effective and confident secondary school physics teacher. The course includes a minimum of 120 days in two contrasting school placements and 60 days of structured learning on UEA’s Norwich campus. Early in the program, you’ll participate in interactive workshops, seminars, and lectures designed to equip you with essential teaching skills. You’ll spend most of your university time within your science and Engineers Teach Physics groups, allowing for focused, subject-specific training alongside peers who share your enthusiasm. A science subject specialist Subject Lead will guide your development with their extensive experience and expertise. The program emphasizes collaborative learning through small group science seminars and practical workshops. You’ll also receive support in teaching outside your primary physics focus, with additional sessions in biology and chemistry. Key issues such as SEND, equality, and controversial topics are addressed throughout. You’ll learn to teach physics up to Key Stage 5, with a strong focus on inspirational, practical teaching linked to industry applications to engage students and cultivate curiosity. The dual placement structure ensures exposure to a range of school environments, and placements are selected with care to align with your personal circumstances. Between placements, you’ll reflect on your experiences with fellow trainees and deepen your understanding of pedagogical theory. Core modules include “Secondary Years QTS,” which helps track your progress against the Teachers’ Standards through targeted mentorship; “Curriculum,” focused on critical reflection from your first placement; “Reflective Project in Education,” which allows you to investigate a broader educational issue; and “Learning,” which delves into pedagogy and classroom application. This structure supports you in becoming a knowledgeable, reflective, and adaptable teacher ready to inspire the next generation through physics.
