COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Secondary Physical Education program at UEA offers a well-rounded structure that blends practical school-based experience with in-depth academic learning. Over the year, you’ll spend a minimum of 120 days in two contrasting school placements and 60 days at UEA, where you’ll build a strong foundation in teaching skills through workshops, lectures, and seminars. The course begins on the Norwich campus, giving you time to develop confidence before stepping into the classroom. While there’s collaboration with trainees from other subjects, the majority of your university time will be spent with the PE group, supported by an expert Subject Lead. You’ll also have the opportunity to gain additional sector-specific qualifications, such as those from the Lawn Tennis Association or British Gymnastics, enhancing your ability to deliver a varied and engaging PE curriculum. A key part of the training focuses on assessment and pupil progression, with practical strategies aimed at fostering participation and achievement. The carefully selected school placements provide exposure to different teaching environments and methods, helping you make informed career decisions. These placements are arranged across East Anglia, with consideration of your personal circumstances to ensure accessibility and high-quality training. Throughout the course, you’ll also be encouraged to reflect on your experiences and engage in discussions with peers, bridging the gap between practice and theory. The academic component is delivered through four compulsory modules: “Secondary Years QTS,” which focuses on practical teaching development and the Teachers’ Standards; “Curriculum,” which requires critical reflection on subject-specific teaching; “Reflective Project in Education,” an opportunity to explore broader educational themes; and “Learning,” which looks at pedagogy and its role in the classroom. Together, these components prepare you to become a skilled, reflective, and confident PE teacher, ready to contribute meaningfully in schools and promote lifelong physical activity among pupils.
