COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Secondary Mathematics program at UEA offers a comprehensive and dynamic training experience, combining both university-based learning and hands-on school placements. Over the course of the year, students will spend a minimum of 120 days on school placements and 60 days in structured university study. The program begins with workshops, seminars, and lectures on the Norwich campus, providing trainees with the necessary skills and confidence to teach their first classes. While at UEA, students will primarily engage with their mathematics group, focusing on subject-specific pedagogy, with support from experienced Subject Leads.Throughout the program, trainees will explore various topics such as the National Curriculum, fluency, reasoning, problem-solving, lesson design, assessment, and the integration of technology in mathematics and computing education. The course also addresses important areas like promoting equal opportunity, supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and developing effective teaching strategies. Students will have the opportunity to microteach, fostering their teaching skills in a practical setting. Placement experiences in two contrasting schools will further enhance their understanding of different educational environments and help them make informed decisions about their future teaching roles.The course includes several compulsory modules, including one focused on school experience (EDUS7001Y), which ensures that trainees meet the Teachers' Standards by the end of the year. The Curriculum Assignment (EDUS7002Y) encourages trainees to reflect on their teaching practice and incorporate research evidence into their development. The Reflective Project in Education (EDUS7003Y) allows students to explore broader aspects of teaching and learning, while the Learning module (EDUS7004Y) examines pedagogy and its impact on classroom practice. Together, these modules aim to equip trainees with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their teaching careers.
