COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Secondary Mathematics with Computing program at UEA offers a comprehensive training experience, combining both university-based study and extensive school placements. Throughout the year, students spend a minimum of 120 days on placement and 60 study days at UEA. The program begins with hands-on workshops, seminars, and lectures that help students develop the skills and confidence needed to begin teaching. Students primarily focus on mathematics but also engage with peers from other subject areas, enriching their learning experience. With expert guidance from a Subject Lead, who has significant secondary school teaching experience, students explore a range of topics, including the National Curriculum, lesson design, assessment strategies, and the use of technology in the classroom.The course also emphasizes inclusive teaching, addressing the needs of students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) while promoting equal opportunity for all pupils. Students learn effective teaching strategies, such as microteaching, and explore innovative approaches to teaching mathematics and computing. The program includes two different school placements, which help students gain diverse experience and insight into various school environments. This ensures that graduates are well-prepared to make informed decisions about their future teaching roles. The placements are carefully selected based on students’ home addresses and individual needs, offering opportunities to experience contrasting school settings.Students also engage in compulsory modules, including one focused on meeting Teachers' Standards and another on curriculum design and assessment. A reflective project allows students to investigate an area of interest related to teaching and learning, further developing their professional skills. By the end of the course, students are equipped with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master's credits, ready to embark on a fulfilling teaching career.
