COURSE CURRICULUM

The structure of the PGCE Primary (5–11) course at UEA is carefully designed to balance academic learning with practical classroom experience. Trainees participate in a structured program of training that supports their overall professional development and provides in-depth knowledge of the primary curriculum. During the year, students undertake two main school placements, each in a contrasting school environment and covering different age bands within the primary range. This variety ensures a broad understanding of how to teach diverse groups of children and adapt to different school settings. Alongside the placements, trainees complete several core modules. "The Learning Child" module focuses on child development, subject-specific pedagogy, adapting teaching to varied needs, and assessment methods. "The Developing Teacher" explores professional behaviour, classroom management, and inclusive teaching practices, underpinned by educational theory. "The Reflective Practitioner" fosters critical reflection as a central skill for ongoing development and effective teaching. The "Primary Years Teaching Practice" module centers on meeting the Teachers’ Standards through real-world school experience, linking university learning to the classroom. This module includes regular reviews of progress, reflections on teaching and learning, and the completion of four Intensive Training and Practice elements, ensuring readiness for the Early Career Teacher phase. Through this blend of practical and academic training, the course aims to develop confident, skilled, and reflective primary teachers.
