COURSE CURRICULUM

The structure of the Primary PGCE with a specialism in Modern Languages at UEA provides a balanced mix of university-based training and hands-on school experience. Over the course of the year, you will take part in a program of professional development designed to deepen your understanding of the primary curriculum while also gaining specialist knowledge in language teaching. You will cover the same core components as other Primary PGCE trainees, but with added focus on the teaching and learning of modern languages, equipping you to deliver this statutory element of the curriculum with confidence. The course includes two main placements in contrasting primary schools, offering teaching experience across two different age bands within the 5–11 range. These placements are carefully chosen to ensure a wide-ranging perspective on different school environments and teaching practices. The taught modules support your development as a reflective and effective teacher. "The Learning Child" focuses on how children learn and how to adapt your teaching across subjects to meet diverse needs. "The Developing Teacher" explores behaviour management, inclusive practice, and professional development. "The Reflective Practitioner" encourages critical thinking and analysis of your teaching experiences. The "Primary Years Teaching Practice (with Specialism)" module links theory to practice and includes tasks aligned with the Teachers' Standards. It emphasizes quality teaching over time, ensuring pupil progress and preparation for your Early Career Teacher phase. This comprehensive training approach allows you to build the practical skills and theoretical understanding necessary to make a strong start to your teaching career, especially with the added advantage of modern language expertise.
