COURSE CURRICULUM

The PGCE Primary (5-11) with a focus on Early Years and Key Stage 1 at UEA offers a carefully structured program that blends academic learning with practical classroom experience. The taught element includes a comprehensive range of training sessions related to the primary curriculum, all designed to support your professional growth and help you meet the diverse needs of young learners. While covering the same core content as peers on the standard primary PGCE, this pathway places particular emphasis on the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, ensuring you gain specialised insights into how young children learn and develop. Throughout the year, you'll undertake two major school placements in contrasting schools, allowing you to work with different age bands within the primary phase. This variety in placements ensures that you gain a broad understanding of different educational environments and teaching strategies. The course includes four key modules. "The Learning Child" develops your understanding of how children learn and how to tailor teaching to their needs. "The Developing Teacher" helps you build professional skills including classroom management and inclusive teaching. "The Reflective Practitioner" encourages continuous reflection on your experiences to enhance your practice. The "Primary Years Teaching Practice (with Specialism)" module ties everything together through hands-on school experience, aligning classroom application with educational theory and national teaching standards. Trainees also complete four Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) elements, ensuring they are well-prepared for the Early Career Teacher phase. By the end of the course, you will have gained the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to effectively support and teach young children in the crucial early stages of their education.
