COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc program in Sport and Physical Activity Education is a one-year, full-time course designed to accommodate the diverse personal and professional commitments of students while fostering critical reflection and advanced academic development. This program offers a blend of theoretical exploration and practical application, allowing students to analyse the roles of social justice and wellbeing in sport and physical activity. A central feature of the course is the opportunity to reflect on both personal and professional practice, as well as evaluate current policies and academic literature. Core modules such as Critical Reading and Educational Research Methods cultivate key analytical and qualitative research skills essential for academic and professional inquiry. The Ethics, Integrity and Representation in Sport module challenges students to critically examine the ethical landscape of sport, focusing on inclusivity and social equity across gender, race, socioeconomic status, and other identities. Performance Through Wellbeing explores how prioritising mental and emotional wellbeing can support high performance in sport and professional environments, combining theoretical insights with a mindfulness course. Students also engage in Advanced Professional Observation and Interaction, gaining credit for real-world experiences in sport or educational settings through at least 40 hours of practical involvement, which might include shadowing professionals, volunteering, or leading service delivery. The culmination of the program is a 60-credit dissertation, where students conduct independent, supervised research aligned with their interests or career goals. This hands-on project encourages deep engagement with a specific topic and provides an avenue to apply all acquired skills and theoretical knowledge. Optional modules allow further tailoring of the learning experience, ensuring alignment with individual interests. Overall, the course prepares graduates for thoughtful leadership and advocacy roles in education, sport, and related fields, with a strong foundation in ethical practice, wellbeing, and evidence-based research.
