COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Evolution and Genomics is an intensive one-year program that immerses students in the forefront of biological research, with a strong emphasis on practical and analytical skills. In the first semester, students are introduced to foundational and advanced concepts through core taught modules covering bioinformatics, data science, scientific communication, and research methodologies. Modules like Data Science and Bioinformatics equip students with practical coding and analytical skills using Unix and high-performance computing, while Effective Communication in Science develops essential presentation and writing abilities for academic and public audiences. Students also engage in interactive seminars and journal clubs through the Frontiers in Biosciences and Problem Based Learning modules, gaining exposure to contemporary research and key issues in molecular medicine and genomics.A major component of the program is the extensive research project carried out in the second half of the year. Students select a research group and supervisor within the UEA or across the Norwich Research Park and conduct independent laboratory or computational research on a topic of their choice. Throughout the process, they plan and design their study, generate and analyse data, and present findings within their research community. This hands-on experience, supported by the Research Planning and Management module, provides essential training for future careers in research or industry.By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical and professional development, the course prepares graduates for a range of careers in evolutionary biology, genomics, and bioinformatics, or for progression to PhD-level study. The structure of the program ensures students gain both specialist knowledge and transferable skills in communication, teamwork, and independent research, making them competitive candidates in academic and applied scientific environments.
