COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Global Plant Health at UEA is a one-year, research-intensive program designed to equip students with the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to address global plant disease challenges. The course combines advanced study of plant pathology, molecular plant-microbe interactions, and bioinformatics with training in leadership, project management, and global disease response strategies. In the first part of the course, students gain a comprehensive understanding of plant diseases, pathogens, and diagnostic methods, as well as how plant biology underpins resistance and susceptibility. The curriculum explores how modern crop improvement techniques like gene editing and synthetic biology can help manage crop losses. Students also engage deeply with the molecular basis of plant immunity and pathogen strategies, learning directly from leading researchers at The Sainsbury Laboratory. Practical modules provide hands-on training in experimental design, lab techniques, data handling, and computational tools. The data science component emphasizes genomic and transcriptomic analysis, highlighting the role of informatics in understanding and combating plant diseases. A key feature of the program is its interdisciplinary approach, integrating scientific research with real-world application. The leadership and disease response module teaches students how to design and implement evidence-based strategies to manage outbreaks, considering legal, ethical, and policy dimensions. The program culminates in a substantial research project where students address a simulated global plant disease outbreak. Working in teams under expert supervision, they apply their learning to create and present a realistic response strategy. This final project combines laboratory work, literature research, and policy planning, giving students a chance to contribute meaningful solutions to urgent global challenges.
