COURSE CURRICULUM

The year-long Master’s course in Energy Engineering is structured to provide a comprehensive blend of academic learning and industry exposure. It consists of 120 credits of taught modules delivered over two semesters from September to May, followed by a 60-credit dissertation. In the autumn term, students begin with a compulsory module designed to establish a common foundation in engineering mathematics, energy engineering fundamentals, and technical skills. This includes introductory content in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, reinforced through laboratory sessions. The course caters to both engineering and non-engineering graduates by leveling mathematical proficiency to at least a UK A-level standard. Students benefit from a diverse academic cohort, creating a rich learning environment. Networking opportunities are embedded throughout the course, beginning with a team presentation to industry professionals and continuing with events such as the EEEGR Christmas Ball and the Southern North Sea Conference. The program emphasizes real-world application, integrating lectures, site visits, and collaboration with industry specialists. Past visits have included energy facilities like a Seajacks wind turbine vessel, Bacton gas plant, and Sizewell nuclear power station. The course is supported by a Business Relationship Manager who assists in securing dissertation placements with industry partners, enhancing the professional relevance of students' research. A standout feature is the strong partnership with the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR), granting students access to numerous member companies and trade events. The ENERGY ENGINEERING DISSERTATION module allows students to undertake an in-depth research project, potentially in collaboration with an industry partner, and includes training in project management. Meanwhile, the ENERGY ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS module introduces students to both renewable and non-renewable energy concepts through team exercises and presentations, while also strengthening core skills in engineering mathematics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
