COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Data Science for Global Development is a one-year program that equips students with a robust foundation in data science and its application to global policy issues. The course begins with training in Python programming and data mining, providing the technical skills needed to manipulate and interpret complex datasets. Students are then introduced to advanced methods of data analysis for impact evaluation, learning how to assess the effectiveness of policies, projects, and interventions. A key strength of the program is its flexibility, allowing students to tailor their learning through optional modules from the School of Global Development or the School of Computing Sciences, depending on their interests and career goals.Throughout the course, students develop a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of data science, and how to apply them across sectors such as health, education, agriculture, financial inclusion, and climate policy. They gain expertise in policy analysis, enabling them to provide data-driven advice and recommendations. The interdisciplinary nature of the course helps students apply their skills across a wide range of development challenges. Emphasis is also placed on critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication, particularly in translating complex analyses into clear policy insights. Ethical issues in data analytics and behavioural science are explored to ensure responsible application of data methods in global contexts.The program culminates in an independent dissertation project, where students conduct original research in an area of their choice under expert supervision. By the end of the course, graduates are well-prepared for roles in international development, public policy, and data-driven research, with a strong command of analytical tools and a deep understanding of global development challenges.
