COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Data Science for Biology is an intensive one-year program that combines biological sciences with advanced data analysis techniques. Students are introduced to modern data-driven methods for understanding biological systems and have the flexibility to tailor their learning through optional modules in either data visualisation or advanced statistical modelling.Throughout the course, students acquire practical experience through lab classes, coding assignments, and hands-on workshops. Key modules include learning statistical techniques such as regression, ANOVA, and multivariate analyses in R, and mastering Python for data analysis tasks. The bioinformatics module provides essential skills for managing and analysing large-scale biological data, such as genomics and transcriptomics, using tools like Unix, bash scripting, GitHub, and high-performance computing clusters. Students also engage in applied data mining, exploring algorithms for classification, clustering, and text mining using Python libraries like Scikit-learn and Pandas.A major component of the course is the dissertation, an independent research project supervised by a faculty member. Students can choose to work on a biological topic that aligns with their interests, which may also involve collaboration with industry partners. The dissertation involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of biological data, allowing students to apply the data science techniques learned throughout the course.
