COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Computing Science course is structured to provide a strong foundation in software development and web technologies, followed by specialized learning tailored to each student’s interests and dissertation focus. In the first semester, students complete three core modules that introduce essential computing concepts and skills. These include programming with Python through the Applications Programming module, where students learn to design, develop, and test software by building a game from scratch. They also study database design and manipulation in the Database Manipulation module, gaining hands-on experience with SQL, Entity-Relationship modelling, normalization, and interfacing with relational databases using Python. The Web Development module covers front-end and back-end web technologies, teaching HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, and server-side implementation while emphasizing usability, accessibility, and security. Students work in teams to build a real-world web application, enhancing their collaboration and project development skills. The compulsory module on Professional Skills for Computer Scientists runs across both semesters and helps students understand the broader impact of computing, covering legal, ethical, and societal considerations, as well as essential academic and professional communication skills. In the second semester, students choose from optional modules that align with their dissertation topic, allowing them to deepen their expertise in areas of personal and professional interest. The dissertation project spans from January to late August and is supervised by a faculty member. Students may select a project from faculty proposals or propose their own, subject to approval and available supervision. This project combines research and practical work, offering the opportunity to apply knowledge gained throughout the course to a real-world or research-based problem. With a mix of core computing skills, practical programming, and specialized knowledge, the MSc Computing Science program equips students with the tools and experience needed for careers in the technology industry or further academic study.
