COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Climate Change and Net Zero Solutions is a one-year full-time program that equips students with the scientific, technical, and policy-based knowledge needed to understand and tackle the climate crisis. The course begins with compulsory modules that cover the science behind climate change, its causes and consequences, and the need to transform energy systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Students will study the fundamentals of Earth’s climate system, including the greenhouse effect, energy balance, and atmospheric circulation. They will also explore the historical and current evidence of climate change and learn to use scientific models to understand and predict future changes. In addition, the course delves into the concept of Net Zero, providing students with an understanding of energy systems, carbon dioxide removal technologies, and the barriers to decarbonisation across various sectors. Through guest lectures and real-world examples, students will gain practical insights into how organisations are adapting to Net Zero goals. A key component of the course is the Research Skills module, which provides essential training in research design, statistical analysis, ethical considerations, and qualitative data collection techniques to prepare students for their dissertation. Students will then complete a major independent research project on a climate or Net Zero-related topic of their choice, with the option to collaborate with external organisations for added practical relevance. The program also offers three optional modules, allowing students to tailor their learning towards natural or social sciences, depending on their interests and career ambitions. With a strong interdisciplinary approach and a focus on real-world application, this MSc prepares graduates for roles in research, consultancy, policy, or further study, with the skills to contribute to one of the most urgent global challenges of our time.
