COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biology of Ageing and Age-Related Disease is a year-long program that offers a comprehensive exploration into the genetic, molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms behind the ageing process and associated diseases. The course combines cutting-edge theoretical knowledge with practical skill development. Through problem-based learning, students engage with current scientific questions, develop critical thinking skills, and gain the ability to evaluate primary research. A strong focus is placed on developing scientific communication skills, ethics, and career development, equipping students for both academic and industry careers. Bioinformatics and data science also feature prominently, with students learning to use Unix, GitHub, and high-performance computing tools to analyse big biological datasets. A major component of the program is the independent research project, which spans the latter part of the year and allows students to carry out original research in collaboration with a world-leading researcher from the Norwich Research Park. Prior to the project, students choose a principal investigator, conduct a detailed literature review, and prepare a research proposal under expert guidance. This allows them to build deep expertise in their chosen topic and gain valuable research management experience. Students also undertake modules in research planning, learning how to write proposals and present their work effectively. The structure of the program supports collaboration, critical analysis, leadership, and teamwork, with regular group activities and discussions. By the end of the course, students will not only have a deep understanding of the biology of ageing but also hands-on experience in scientific research, data analysis, and problem-solving—making them well-prepared for PhD programs or roles in biotechnology, academia, or healthcare innovation.
