COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Advanced Organic Chemistry is a one-year program designed to prepare students for careers in industries such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, specialty, and fine organic chemicals. The course combines general and advanced-level lecture modules with intensive hands-on laboratory work and research. The lecture component covers key subjects such as synthesis, asymmetric and target-oriented synthesis, spectroscopy, organometallic chemistry, stereochemistry, and catalysis. These topics are selected to build expertise in techniques and knowledge that are highly sought after in chemical industries. The laboratory unit runs throughout the academic year and begins with a series of advanced experiments that develop students' practical skills in experimental chemistry. This foundation supports the transition into an individual research project later in the course. Students are assigned to active research groups where they conduct original investigations on contemporary topics in organic chemistry. These projects culminate in a written dissertation and an oral presentation, showcasing their ability to communicate scientific findings effectively. Example project topics have included gold-catalyzed synthesis of heterocyclic systems, the role of enzymes in synthesis, and innovative approaches in cross-coupling reactions using palladium. The lecture unit, worth 50 credits, further deepens theoretical understanding through seminars and advanced coursework in synthesis planning, physical organic chemistry, and catalysis.
