COURSE CURRICULUM

The structure of the Clinical Science MRes program is centered around a highly personalized and research-focused experience, with the majority of the time devoted to the 100-credit dissertation module. This signature component begins as soon as students join the program and continues through to the final submission of their dissertation. It offers an immersive opportunity to develop and carry out independent research to a publishable standard. Throughout the year, students are supported through a series of tailored tutorials that guide them through every stage of the research process, from planning and analysis to writing and publication. To complement the dissertation work, students undertake four additional research skills modules that enhance their methodological understanding and practical abilities. These modules are designed to strengthen students’ competencies in both qualitative and quantitative research, as well as in navigating ethical and governance issues, particularly within clinical and health system contexts. A key emphasis is placed on translating research into various formats, ensuring students can communicate effectively with academic peers and the public. The compulsory module on Research Ethics and Governance equips students with the knowledge to manage ethical aspects of research, write participant materials, and engage in public involvement. Another core module focuses on essential transferable skills such as abstract writing, poster presentation, and preparing grant applications. The Introduction to Research Methods module further builds a foundation in research design, data collection, and analysis. The program culminates in the completion of a dissertation that includes a literature review, an original research paper, and a reflective report, totaling up to 15,000 words. Together, these elements provide a comprehensive and supportive training environment for students aiming to pursue research careers in clinical or academic settings, preparing them with the skills, experience, and confidence needed to lead research initiatives or continue into doctoral studies.
