COURSE CURRICULUM

This unique double degree program in International Relations offers students the opportunity to gain a truly global perspective by studying at two leading institutions: the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. During the first year at UEA, students will be introduced to the foundational elements of international relations, with a strong focus on key theories, concepts, and research methodologies. The compulsory core module, "Power, Cooperation and Exploitation: Approaches to International Relations," equips students with a deep understanding of major theoretical frameworks, helping them critically assess how power operates on the international stage and how cooperation and conflict emerge between states and other global actors.In addition to the core content, students have the flexibility to shape their learning experience by choosing from a wide range of optional modules. These cover essential contemporary themes such as international security, war and conflict, global development, and international governance. The curriculum is designed to foster analytical and critical thinking, allowing students to explore how international relations theory translates into practice in addressing global issues.After completing their first academic year in the UK, students transition to Ritsumeikan University in Japan for their second year. This structure provides not only a comparative academic experience but also the cultural immersion and international exposure that are vital for a comprehensive understanding of global politics. Overall, the program prepares graduates with the theoretical insights, methodological tools, and intercultural competencies needed to pursue careers in diplomacy, international organisations, policy-making, or further academic research in international relations.
