COURSE CURRICULUM

This Master's program in Public Policy and Public Management provides students with an advanced understanding of the theories, models, and concepts used in the study of public policy and public management. The course structure includes two taught semesters followed by a dissertation, allowing students to gain in-depth knowledge and specialize in specific policy areas. The compulsory modules in the first year lay the foundation for the program. The "Understanding the Policy Process: Continuity and Change" module explores how public policy is developed, focusing on key theories, models, and policy areas such as health, immigration, and the environment. Students learn to critically analyze the policy process in the UK and compare it with other OECD democracies, gaining a broader understanding of the role of nation-states in policy development.The second compulsory module, "Public Management: What and Why?" examines the organization and operation of public services. It covers the challenges of public management, including the tension between democracy and bureaucratic efficiency, as well as public sector reforms. The module equips students with analytical tools to engage in debates about the future of public management and how it can be improved in practice. In addition to these core modules, students can choose from a wide range of optional modules that allow them to specialize in topics such as electoral management, foreign policy, digital governance, and rural policies. This flexibility enables students to tailor the program to their interests and career aspirations.In the final phase of the program, students will complete a 10,000-word dissertation, which offers the opportunity to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice. The dissertation is supervised by a faculty member, providing students with the chance to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world policy issues. This comprehensive program prepares students for careers in public policy, research, and management.
