COURSE CURRICULUM

The Modern History Master's program offers a comprehensive and dynamic approach to studying 20th-century British, European, and global history. The course is structured into four main components, with a strong emphasis on developing both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. In the core module, students are introduced to the latest theoretical approaches and research in modern history, examining a wide range of topics including state-building projects, the role of women in history, and more. This module is taught by leading scholars and allows students to engage with archival discoveries and contemporary historical debates.In addition to theoretical learning, the program emphasizes the development of practical historical research skills through workshops and seminars. Students are taught essential tools for conducting original historical research and are guided on how to apply these skills in various professional settings. These sessions help students transition from undergraduate to postgraduate research, with a focus on employability. There are also opportunities for students to work with local archives, museums, and heritage institutions, fostering practical experience. Seminars cover various research methodologies, such as oral history, digital humanities, and transnational histories, ensuring students are well-prepared for future academic or professional roles.Alongside these core components, students can specialize in a specific area of modern history by selecting from a range of annually updated tutorial options. This allows them to explore the topics they are most passionate about in-depth. The final component of the program is the Master's dissertation, where students undertake independent research on a chosen topic under the supervision of faculty members. This dissertation, ranging from 14,000 to 16,000 words, is an opportunity for students to contribute original work to the field of history. The program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in research, archives, museums, and beyond.
