COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Media and Society is a one-year program designed to explore the complex relationship between media and the world we live in. Throughout the year, students examine how media both shapes and is shaped by society, engaging with key issues such as global media economies, the digital divide, and the structure and governance of cultural and creative industries. Core modules provide a solid foundation in media theory and research methods. “Media & Society: Technologies, Content and Users” offers a comprehensive look at the modern media landscape, including its global structure, content production, audience engagement, and industry management. “Approaches to Studying Media and Culture” introduces students to the theoretical and methodological foundations of media and cultural studies, drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives and key texts that have defined the field. These modules help students develop critical awareness and analytical tools to examine media systems and practices from both global and local viewpoints. In addition to the core curriculum, students can select from a broad range of optional modules, allowing them to tailor their studies to areas of personal interest such as digital communication, social media, or global media flows. The culmination of the degree is the Media and Communication Research Project, completed over the summer. This final project can take the form of a traditional dissertation or a creative research-based piece, such as a media campaign, interactive project, or documentary. Supported by a supervisor, students conduct in-depth research into a topic of their choice, applying the skills and knowledge gained during the taught portion of the course. The program prepares graduates for careers in media, communications, and cultural industries, as well as for further academic research.
