COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Mathematics Education is a one-year program designed to introduce students to Mathematics Education as a research discipline within the social sciences. It focuses on how educational research can inform and transform mathematics teaching practices and policies across a variety of educational contexts. The course begins by exploring key theories that underpin Mathematics Education research, drawing from fields such as developmental psychology, sociocultural theory, discourse analysis, sociology, anthropology, and neuroscience. These theories are applied to real classroom data and personal experiences to prepare students for their own research projects.Alongside this theoretical grounding, students engage with milestone international studies in Mathematics Education, covering primary to university-level education, as well as informal and workplace uses of mathematics. These studies provide insight into the practical implications of research findings and how they can be observed in professional settings. Students also develop their skills in critical reading and academic writing, learning how to engage with texts analytically and reflectively.As the course progresses, attention shifts to Mathematics and Science Education research that focuses on digital resources and pedagogy. This includes studies from a range of contexts and curriculum areas, offering students a broad understanding of innovation and challenges in teaching with technology.Students also take a module in educational research methods, which introduces qualitative approaches such as ethnography, case studies, and interviews, providing the necessary foundation to design and conduct independent research. In the final phase of the program, students complete a dissertation on a topic of their choice, supported by a supervisor from the Research in Mathematics Education Group. This project allows students to contribute to the field with original research and to explore topics that align with current academic work or their own professional interests. An optional module adds further flexibility, allowing students to tailor the course to their individual goals.
