COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in International Security is a one-year, full-time program that provides students with a dynamic and comprehensive education in contemporary global security issues. Teaching takes place through a mix of lectures, seminars, and interactive workshops, beginning with a strong foundation in international relations theory and research methodology. In the first semester, students explore the interdisciplinary nature of international politics, gaining key skills in social enquiry, including interview techniques and survey design. A unique feature of this semester is the “War Games” module, where students participate in simulation exercises to examine diplomacy and military strategy in action, helping to build practical understanding of inter-state relations and strategic decision-making.The second semester shifts focus to the core discipline of security studies. Students critically engage with the evolution of the field, from its origins in Cold War strategic thought to today’s broader concerns, including humanitarian interventions, global pandemics, poverty, migration, terrorism, and transnational crime. The compulsory module “Rethinking Global Security” challenges students to explore the fundamental questions of what security means, who it serves, and what its pursuit entails. This critical lens is paired with empirical analysis, equipping students to understand and evaluate real-world issues through both classical and contemporary theoretical perspectives.The final stage of the program is the dissertation, completed over the summer. Students select their own research topic in consultation with academic staff and conduct an independent inquiry into an area of interest within international security. The dissertation, at 10,000 words, is an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge and research skills gained throughout the course to a specific issue or question. With its strong emphasis on both critical thinking and practical engagement, the MA in International Security prepares students for careers in policy, international organisations, government, and academia.
