COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Film Studies offers an in-depth exploration of both the theoretical and practical aspects of film. In the first semester, students are introduced to key concepts, debates, and historical developments in film studies, gaining a broad understanding of global film industries, particularly in the context of digital technologies. A distinctive feature of the program is the Film Festivals module, which allows students to gain hands-on experience by participating in UEA-led or affiliated film festivals like the Norwich Film Festival and Norwich Queer International Film Festival. This provides practical exposure to areas such as programming, curating, and understanding the role of festivals within the global film landscape. In the second semester, students have the opportunity to specialize in specific areas of film studies, building on the knowledge acquired in the first term. The program also emphasizes the development of digital research and communication skills, which are essential for academic and professional success in film. These skills will be particularly useful for the independent research project completed during the summer semester, where students can choose to create either a creative or a critical research-based project. Additionally, the Key Digital and Research Skills module equips students with essential tools for conducting research, including digital media techniques and project management. By the end of the program, students will have acquired both theoretical expertise and practical experience in film studies, preparing them for careers or further academic pursuits in the field.
