COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Early Modern History provides students with a comprehensive grounding in the key theoretical, methodological, and thematic approaches to studying the early modern period. In the first part of the course, you will explore religious, political, social, and cultural history, focusing on topics such as mentalities, gender, Atlantic history, and daily life. You will gain skills in primary source analysis and learn to conceptualize historical problems. Workshops and seminars will introduce you to various research methods, helping you transition from undergraduate to postgraduate-level research. The course emphasizes employability, offering opportunities to engage with local archives, museums, and heritage institutions, while exploring topics like digital humanities and oral history.In addition to this foundational knowledge, you will gain practical research skills, including paleography, which is essential for reading and transcribing early modern archival sources. Through specialist tutorials, you will focus on an area of early modern history that interests you most, working closely with an expert in your chosen field. The MA culminates in a dissertation, providing you the opportunity to conduct original research under the guidance of faculty members. Key compulsory modules include *Historical Research Skills*, which prepares you for professional research and dissemination, *Society, Politics, and Culture in the Early Modern World*, which covers a broad range of early modern topics, and *Early Modern English Paleography*, which equips you with the ability to read historical manuscripts. By the end of the course, you'll be prepared to contribute original research to the field of early modern history.
