COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Museum and Heritage Studies offers a comprehensive learning experience that integrates both cultural heritage and museum studies. The program is structured into two key phases: the first half provides foundational knowledge in these fields, encouraging students to engage with current issues in the sector through interactive seminars, group work, and independent study. Core topics include cultural interpretation, representation, and the evolving dynamics between marginalized and majoritarian cultures. A key focus is on understanding the legacy of colonialism in heritage practices, such as repatriation and the decolonization of museums. The second half of the program allows for specialization through optional modules, including in-depth study on World Heritage and museum practices, preparing students for their final project. Students can choose between a Dissertation or the Critical Practice pathway, which involves gaining practical skills like exhibition design or social enterprise. The curriculum encourages a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring students develop essential organizational and communicative skills. Key compulsory modules include critical perspectives in museums and heritage, world heritage, interpretation in museums, and curating collections and exhibitions. These modules provide a rich understanding of museum practices, heritage debates, and the role of cultural institutions in a global context. By the end of the program, students are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the fields of museum and heritage studies, with the flexibility to pursue a variety of career paths or further academic research.
